It was essentially a no-brainer to start her investigation at a place where you could acquire an incredible amount of knowledge; which just happened to be a library. Although Madoka wasn't an avid reader herself, she could definitely appreciate such a location nonetheless. If she had to remain here for an unknown amount of time, she might as well utilize the provided facilities to full capacity.
As Madoka stroke a strand of hair behind her ear, she silently mulled over her next course of action. She could go about her investigations in many ways; be it by assessing the overall state of this room (clean or dusty, just to name one example), what kind of categories had an abundance of books, if there was a list of books being rented at all, checking out the magazine and newspaper corner in particular--
It only took her a moment to stick with the latest suggestion. Admittedly, the chances of this library holding recent newspapers and magazines was relatively low, but it still couldn't hurt to be thorough. Furthermore, it was one of the less time consuming options that she could choose from, as she merely needed to take a quick glance at the dates these papers were made. Putting them back wouldn't also be too much work, so it really seemed like a good starting point.
With her decision made final, Madoka didn't waste another second and searched for the corner that housed the desired items. Fortunately for her, she didn't have to look for long to find them - and without further ado, she started to take a pile out and lay them down on the ground. Although there were chairs and tables not all that far away from her, Madoka concluded that it wasn't worth the effort to carry all these papers there, just so she could return them five minutes later. Thus, the detective sat down on the cold, hard floor and began to take the first newspaper. She quickly scanned it, noting from the paper alone that it must've been quite old. Then again, this could be said about all of them - at first glance, mind you -, but that wouldn't stop her from checking them nonetheless. For all she knew, someone could've deliberately make them look old, so no one would even look at them to begin with.
With the unchecked pile on her right, she put down the ones that she did check on her left and proceeded with that routine in a swift and coordinated manner. Madoka had been so engrossed in her work that she didn't realize someone entering the library...

While Yanagi had enjoyed a few private moments of relishing the new facts about himself that he now knew, in what was, apparently, his bedroom (where he magically had fitting clothes--though he supposed that was the use of the measurements). He supposed, had others seen him reacting to this information, that whatever reputation he may have would soon be compromised. While he wasn't sure, exactly, who he was, he knew one thing: that Yanagi Tsuneo was not a loser.
(Or, perhaps something more eloquent. Self-description was not high on his current priorities.)
After he finally allowed himself to look away from his information, he peered, quietly, at the maps. It seemed this building was far more complex than anticipated, especially thanks to the grossly understated 'research laboratories'. While he had many questions, and a strange, burning desire to investigate. Perhaps familiarizing himself with his current surroundings would lend some sort of neurological path to remembering what his life was like before this-- or at least, he could hope as much. After trying all of the laboratories to, disappointingly, find them all locked, Yanagi found himself stumped. His only hypothesis didn't really pan out, so where was the next best place to look? His instinct said library, though, considering the state of the rest of the lodge, he figured it wouldn't turn out very helpful. Nonetheless, quietly he walked over, opening the door only to peer at...
Well.
A small girl, seated on the floor with neatly stacked piles of newspaper surrounding her. Eyebrows furrowing into a hard line, Yanagi's gaze slid to a nearby table, which seemed a hell of a lot more comfortable than the cold, hard floor. As he walked, his heels clicked calmly, almost rhythmic as he approached the figure--though she didn't seem to notice him until he crouched in front of her, curious gaze causing him to tilt his head before lazily scanning the newspapers.
"You know there's a table right there, right? But, uh, what are you doing?"

As anticipated, Madoka made a good amount of progress in a matter of mere minutes - which wasn't all too surprising, given that a quick glance at the front page alone was enough to tell her when the papers were actually printed. They essentially flew at that point, Madoka keeping a steadfast focus on the task at hand. If she kept up with that pace, she'd be done in roughly five minutes.
However, life had something different planned for her, as the detective flinched upon hearing a voice so close to her. Although she didn't let out a single noise, her widened eyes were proof enough that she'd been taken by surprise, if the flinch hadn't signalized as much. As Madoka looked up, she had a clear view of Yanagi Tsuneo's face. The girl blinked a few times, her shoulders dropping back to a more relaxed state.
"Yo", Madoka greeted the other with a peace sign, setting aside the paper that she'd just finished scanning - while her other hand took up the next one, with Madoka never breaking eye contact with Yanagi,"I know, buuuuut I'm gonna be done with these in a few minutes anyway, so might as well stay close to the shelf from where I've got them. My butt won't freeze off, don't worry about it."
The mere fact that she was able to keep a complete straight face while uttering those last words was sure... something. Regardless, she replied to his inquiry soon after:"Looking at the dates of these newspapers and magazines. Some libraries tend to have recent articles, so I thought I might give this a shot. We know it's christmas season, but an exact date would be still appreciated."
At that point, Madoka glanced shortly down on the papers she held - yet another ancient one that dates a few years back. The detective barely contained a sigh as she turned it around for Yanagi to see:"Doesn't look like as if it's gonna amount to much though. They're all really old, dating back to at least a few years."
When she thought that she held out the paper for enough, she continued with her routine - putting it aside while simultaneously picking up another paper. "Even then, doesn't hurt to cover our ground as much as possible; and these here are only the start. Simply the quickest task to accomplish, before I move on to other ways to find possible clues", Madoka explained, giving off a light shrug.
"... Soooo, did you also come here to take a look around?", the detective inquired at last, tilting her head to the side.

Peering quietly at her, Yanagi raised one eyebrow quietly as she flashed him a peace sign. After a moment of hesitation, he raised his hand in response, mimicking her peace sign with one of his own before she answered him, nonchalant as ever. Then, she was explaining her process and showing him a paper, which he scanned, quietly, before she put it back down and moved on. As she peered at one of the new ones she had picked up, Yanagi frowned, tilting his head at her like she was an art piece in a museum that he just couldn't figure out.
"Wouldn't a chair be more comfortable?"
Yanagi hummed, picking up one of the ones Madoka had discarded, sitting quietly on the floor and reading through the paper. While Madoka's confirmation that the papers were outdated was useful, none of the information Yanagi read really meant anything to him, so he chewed his lip, quietly.
Eventually, he slid the discarded pile closer to himself, creating his own pile of papers to flip quietly through. The truth was he wasn't sure exactly what they were looking for, but reading them made him feel at least somewhat useful, and as the pair worked in silence, the only sound between the two the quiet turn of pages or a paper being discarded, Yanagi found himself relaxing, somewhat. The stress of the unknown situation and the amnesia seemed to melt away as he simply tried to find anything that Madoka could deem as useful, though the longer it went on, the more it seemed that they wouldn't find anything. After a few moments, though, he set his paper down, peering at her with a click of his tongue before resting his hands in his lap.
"How do we know it's Christmas time? I mean, it's what's being presented to us, but... Perhaps it's only a theme of the show?"
His suspicion seemed short lived, however, as he quickly got to his feet and tried to look for any interesting books. As he was up, Madoka spoke to him, and he laughed, a short, hollow sound, before peering at Madoka from behind a bookshelf.
"I thought a library would be an interesting start. Well-- not as interesting as the labs, but they're locked, so, I guess I might as well come here. Really, I was looking for anything that had to do with the talents in the labs- or perhaps the people they correspond to.... Er... Does that sound creepy?"

When Yanagi returned the peace sign gesture, it raised a small smile from Madoka. It was a welcome surprise, though that didn't mean that she didn't anticipate it at all, either. Some people did it and some didn't - the detective never held it against anyone if they chose the latter. Still, it made her a tad happy when someone went for the former. Made it sense for her to feel happy over such a trivial thing? Probably not, but humans weren't entirely logical beings to begin with.
The response to the chair comment was almost immediate:"Yeah, but I'm too lazy to get up now."
(At least she was being honest about her feelings, huh?)
After that, Madoka threw Yanagi another glance when he settled down near her and began to look through papers himself. It appeared as if he was actually reading them, which certainly had its benefits, too. For all they knew, there could be a common point between them that would only reveal itself if you took your time to analyze them thoroughly. Madoka certainly welcomed the help and thus, focused back on her own pile - albeit she worked in a slower pace now, as she occasionally skimmed one or two articles every two papers. The detective didn't mind the silence; it was a comfortable atmosphere as far as she was concerned. Talking wasn't necessary all the time, especially for someone who wasn't even all that talkative to begin with.
Madoka only looked up when Yanagi addressed her again and for a moment, she blinked in slight confusion, before she reminded herself of something important:"Oh, right. You wouldn't know why christmas season would be plausible. Sorry." The detective rubbed the back of her head, before continuing:"Hope's Peak admits their new students in winter, instead of spring. Dunno why, but it's always been like that."
... Though that didn't mean that he was wrong, either. After all, no one knew how much time has passed since their last wake moment outside of this lodge. Quite frankly, it still puzzled her that she didn't have clear memories of that moment, either.
At the next exchange, Madoka's eyebrows furrowed slightly down; the labs were locked? That seemed strange, as there was already one room that was described as such - so why keep them out of more? Unless these were the last preperations that Santako and Krampusuke were talking about...
Madoka shook her head as she replied:"Nah, it's not creepy. It's only normal to be curious, even more so in your case. Don't feel bad about it." Really, if anyone had the right to get as much intel as possible, it would be Yanagi. The brown-haired girl could hardly imagine what it must be like to not remember anything about yourself - it sounds terrifying.
(Forgetting those whom she held close--)
(Terrifying indeed.)
"Too bad that these labs are closed, though. Wanted to take a look there myself after investigating this place, but oh well. That's life for you", Madoka shrugged, then after a few seconds, added the following,"... Hope you're gonna find something that helps you recall stuff from your past soon."
